HONG KONG – March 29, 2021 – Despite the US sales commanding the headlines of the fine and rare wine auction market thus far in 2021, Hong Kong and China showed the world it’s back for business in the Year of the Bull, riding Acker’s single-owner sale, the Brilliant Collection of the Golden Bull, to the tune of US$10 million in sales. An astonishing 30% of lots in the auction set New World Records, as Burgundy once again returned to the spotlight, with the wines of Lalou Bize-Leroy tallying a remarkable 61 New Records, followed by 26 for Domaine de la Romanee Conti, and 19 for Armand Rousseau. Acker ended the first quarter in dominating fashion, owning more than 50% of the market share amongst all major houses, along with sales three times that of the nearest competitor.

After a brief disappearance from the top of the charts in Acker’s last auction, Domaine de la Romanee Conti once again seized control of the Top Ten Lots of the sale this weekend, with the Top Lot going to six bottles of 1999 DRC Romanee Conti in OWC that realized HK$1,344,600/US$173,497. In second place stood twelve bottles of 2008 DRC Montrachet in OWCs, fetching HK846,600/US$109,239, while three bottles of 2009 Domaine Leroy Musigny in OWC brought in HK$796,800/US$102,813, claiming the third spot. Coming in fourth were twelve bottles of 2006 DRC Montrachet in OWC that realized HK$697,200/US$89,961. Two lots shared fifth place, as a twelve bottle 1999 DRC Assortment case and six bottles of 1961 Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle in OWC each sold for HK$647,400/US$83,535. A four-way tie rounded out the Top Ten, as another twelve bottle 1999 DRC Assortment, parcels of twelve bottles of 2005 DRC La Tache in OWCs, parcels of three bottles of 2005 DRC Romanee Conti in OWC, and twelve bottles of 2011 Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant in OWC all sold for HK$597,600/US$77,110 apiece.

White wine was also in high demand, setting 62 of the total 207 New World Records. Henri Boillot had the strongest showing, achieving 16 New World Records, led by twelve bottles of 2010 Montrachet in OWCs that sold for HK$109,560/US$14,137. Domaine Leflaive attained 12 New World Records, as a single bottle of 2002 Montrachet realized HK$84,660/US$10,924. Additionally, Bouchard, Pere et Fils accumulated ten New World Records, followed closely behind by Ramonet with six and Raveneau with five.

“What an extraordinary auction!” exclaimed Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “The Brilliant Collection of the Golden Bull blew buyers away with its outstanding selection and impeccable provenance. It was tremendous to see Hong Kong and China back for business, although the demand in this sale was truly global, with notable activity from Russia, the US, Brazil, Japan and Singapore. It is almost impossi-bull to believe the incredible demand for the world’s finest and rarest wines right now, but buyers need not worry! Acker will be back with two incredible auctions coming in April, on the 9th and 10th in Delaware, and back again in Hong Kong with another two-day sale on the 23rd and 24th. No bull!”
