Reviews & Scores
Pretty, even airy, aromas display notes of red and dark currant, ample earth and underbrush nuances plus hints of spice and wood. The sleek, delicious and intense medium weight plus flavors possess a caressing but powerful palate impression while exhibiting outstanding length on the youthfully austere and very firm finale.

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is also very promising, mingling aromas of cherries, earthy wild berries, rose petals and spices in an incipiently complex mélange. Full-bodied, rich and layered, it's elegantly muscular and built for the long haul, its enveloping core of fruit largely concealing serious reserves of fine, powdery tannins. I deferred my tasting with Charles Van Canneyt until as late as possible, as he told me that several protracted malolactic fermentations had only just concluded by the end of harvest 2020. The wines were worth the wait, however, as this is a terrific success for Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. Rich, dramatic and concentrated, with vibrant fruit tones and ripe tannins, everything reviewed here comes recommended. Yields were low, and alcohol levels range between 13.5% and 14.5%, but the wines are more dynamic than their 2018 counterparts (which a packed schedule precluded me from revisiting on this occasion, something I'll endeavor to remedy before too long).

There are just eight barrels instead of the usual 13 barrels of the 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru this year. Matured in around 50% new oak, it has a hard job following the superlative Malconsorts, but does its best with blackberry, wild hedgerow and light iodine aromas. The palate is succulent on the entry, and quite effervescent, with a fine bead of acidity, but maybe this is just a little too exotic toward the finish. It needs to show more refinement once in bottle.

Alain Hudelot-Noëllat sold his parcel at the bottom of the Clos, but the domaine retains 0.69ha at the top of the slope in the lieux-dits Chiores and Garenne. These vines were planted in 1950 and deliver ripe, forward red and black fruit, with a great complexity of savoury, mineral and floral undertones. The texture is fresh and lively, yet there is impressive density lurking in the background. One of the top bottlings from the Clos de Vougeot.

Cask sample. Not quite such a deep crimson as this producer's 2019 Vosne Beaux Monts. Sumptuous, savoury, heady, layered nose. Sweet palate entry and real tension on the palate. Lip-smacking fruit and particularly polished tannins. A note of bitter black cherries adds interest. Light grip on the end before persistent vibrant fruit on the finish. Yet another fine 2019 Clos de Vougeot.
